Around 1090 Neuenburg founded and built under the Thuringian Landgrave Ludwig
der Springer, several stages of construction until the middle of the 12th
century
From 1030/31 Ludwig I became margrave; extension continued
Middle of the 12th to middle of the 13th century the castle's high medieval
heyday, becomes residence of the landgraves; Heinrich von Veldeke and St
Elisabeth of Thuringia stay here; erection of double chapel and residential
tract
1247 under control of the house of Wettin
15th-18th century changed into a late medieval and baroque residential
castle
Since 1770 administration building, not used as a residence
1815 Neuenburg became Prussian domain and seat of administration; in the 19th
century parts pulled down and first restoration work
1935 museum opened (until 1970); after 1945 flat conversions
Since 1970 closure and dilapidation
Since 1983/1990 restoration, used as a museum
